Wolves edge out win over Indians
By CRAIG HALL
When one talks about Heavener’s football team, the praise usually goes to the offense.
And rightly so. The Wolves have an explosive offense and several weapons.
The Heavener defense has not been in the same discussion. That changed in Thursday’s opener against Pocola.
After being torched for 32 points in the first half, the Wolves’ defense blanked the Indians in the second half and broke a two-game losing streak against the Indians with a 33-32 win in the brutal heat at Harvey Stadium.
The Wolves scored the only touchdown in the second half to take the lead and got three turnovers by the Indians, including two interceptions by senior Jackson Clubb. Heavener also recovered a fumble with just over 2 minutes remaining that allowed the Wolves to run out the clock for their first win in a season-opener since a victory over North Rock Creek in 2020.
Heavener will not get to enjoy its biggest win in several years long as the Wolves are at home again next week against Central Sallisaw.
Pocola had scored a combined 105 points in wins over the Wolves in the previous two seasons, then used big play after big play to speed away to a 32-27 lead at halftime before that offense came up empty in the second half.
The Indians, expected to be one of the main threats to win its district, gets to play against Hackett, Arkansas next week.

Vian downs Heavener again
VIAN – Vian scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and made it hold up in a 5-1 win over Heavener in fast pitch softball Tuesday afternoon.
Vian is 8-3. Heavener is 3-4 and visits Eufaula in a district game Friday since Thursday’s game was postponed due to the football game that night.
Vian won at Heavener earlier in the year, 15-4, so this game was much more competitive.
Kristy Shadwick went the distance for the Lady Wolves. She allowed seven hits on five runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.
Paisley Stacy led the Lady Wolves at the plate, going 2-2. Cayleigh McGee, Gracie Morrison and Addley Riddley had the Lady Wolves’ other hits.
