The Heavener wrestling team traveled to Hilldale High School for a tournament Friday.
The Wolves were in the running for runner-up until late in the day. Heavener eventually finished sixth overall. The only school in the Wolves’ class that finished ahead was Sequoyah-Tahlequah. The other schools competed in Class 4A-6A.
Jerami Casteel pinned his way into the finals at heavyweight before taking second place. He was 3-1 on the day.
Jaxon Armstrong also made the finals and was ahead on points before getting caught, was pinned and took second place. He was 2-1 on the day and increased his season record to 7-3, which leads the high school team.
Jorge Lira picked up his first two wins of the season and finished third in his weight, going 2-2 on the day.
Kevin Bretado went 4-1 and finished strong with a third-place finish. Emelio Garcia finished fourth, going 2-2.
Several other Wolves wrestled really tough, according to Coach Jack Armstrong, but came up a little short of the podium.
“These guys are working hard and getting better every day,” Armstrong said.
Heavener goes to Mena, Arkansas Monday for a tri-meet before going to Gore Tuesday.


Heavener split two games with Hartshorne Friday night on Fan Appreciation Night at Heavener.
The Lady Miners broke open the game in the second half and used their pressure defense to force several turnovers in a 74-51 win before Heavener’s boys dominated the second game in a 54-34 victory.
Heavener is back home Monday against Poteau.

Heavener seventh and eighth grade team was the OAAC regional runner-up. Team members are Yug Pael, Hector Hernandez, Ben West, Jerred Boss and Stephen Heflin.


JH Wolves win two firsts at Bixby
COWETA – Heavener’s junior high wrestlers competed at Coweta Friday in a tough tournament.
The Wolves finished just outside of the top 10, competing against 4A, 5A and 6A schools. Heavener took eight wrestlers and placed three of them.
Jerami Casteel and Gracie Springfield both pinned their ways to first place in their class. Casteel was 4-0 with four pins and Springfield was 3-0 with three pins, improving to 9-0 this season with nine pins. Alex Armstrong was 3-1 with three pins before losing to a Bixby wrestler in the finals.
Logan Hetherington was 3-2 and came up just short of placing. Briar Adams, Jonah Scroggins, Wesley Johnson and Lucas Corbin all wrestler tough, according to Coach Jack Armstrong, but came up short of placing

INTERN Spotlight:
Haden White is a junior intern in the HS Library with Mrs. Diane Lynch. Hayden assists with shelving, displays, creating digital & artistic content, organizing, running errands, helping students & teachers, and communicating with groups. He helps keep the library and the HS Student Council running smoothly. Mrs. Lynch says she is grateful for Hayden's outstanding help and his amazing attitude.
Haden plans to attend NSU and major in Arts or English after high school. He has an interest in law and politics and plans to own an Italian Greyhound or racoon at some point! Something else interesting about Haden is that he is wants to travel the world to learn about various cultures!

The Heavener wrestling teams traveled to Broken Bow Tuesday for a dual.
The JH Wolves wrestled tough but got manhandled by the Broken Bow wrestlers, 50-24. Heavener Coach Jack Armstrong said the Wolves are starting a lot of seventh graders and they faced several ninth graders.
“We wrestled hard but couldn’t pull out the wins needed to win the dual,” he said.
Jerami Casteel was the lone win for the JH team with a pin at heavyweight.
The high school Wolves lost a close dual 30-24, with Jaxon Armstrong and Travis Kincaid both picking up pins.
Alex Armstrong also picked up a win in an exhibition match with another junior high wrestler after losing a tough one to the varsity 165 lb wrestler.
Jaxon Armstrong is leading the team with a 3-0 record with three pins.
Gracie Springfield is the top junior high wrestler with a record of 6-0 with 6 pins.
This weekend, Heavener wraps up the first semester with a trip to Coweta.

Junior High Basketball vs. WIlburton tonight has been cancelled. 5th and 6th grade will still go to Poteau for their games.

Heavener’s Gracie Springfield went to Wilburton Saturday to compete in a girls’ wrestling tournament. She pinned her way through four opponents on the way to first place in her weight class.
“She’s such a great kid and wrestler,” said Heavener wrestling Coach Jack Armstrong.

Heavener's boys defeated Booneville to take the Battle on the Board championship while the Lady Wolves finished third with an easy win over Union Christian Friday



Heavener’s girls needed a win.
After starting 0-3, the Lady Wolves were looking for a victory. It could have been any kind of win, but turned into a no-doubt conquest with a 73-21 victory over Arkoma in the battle on the border tournament at Arkoma.
Heavener advanced to play in the third-place game against Union Christian 4:20 p.m. Friday.
The Lady Wolves removed any doubt against Arkoma, scoring the first 19 points of the game, building a 19-4 edge at the end of the first quarter and extending the margin throughout the contest, even though every player on Heavener’s bench got significant minutes.
Heavener had four players in double figures. Ava Cartwright led the Lady Wolves in a season-best 15 points, Brooklyn May scored 14, McKinley Alexander finished with 12 and Cayleigh McGee got in double figures with 12.
Heavener’s boys (3-0) will play for the tournament championship at 8:20 p.m. Friday against Booneville.



Both of Heavener High School’s basketball teams will play in the Battle on the border tournament at Arkoma this week.
Heavener’s girls play the Mulberry/Braggs winner at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The boys take on the Arkoma/Union Christian Academy winner at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday.
Losers play in the consolation round Thursday while the winners advance to Friday’s finals.



Landon Thurman scored 15 points and Heavener got a big lift from Zaid Rodriguez off the bench in a 50-37 win at Panama Friday night.
After Panama had trimmed a 20-point deficit to six points, Rodriguez made a basket and had an assist to Nick Lopez on the next offensive series as Heavener’s lead grew back to double-digits. Heavener is 2-0 and plays in the Battle of the Border at Arkoma this week.
