The Wilson Minute
By Mackenzie Slusser
Mrs. Yolanda Wilson has worked at Heavener Schools for twenty-four years. She taught High School Math for ten years and then became a full-time Elementary Librarian for ten years. For the last four years, she has worked as a High School Counselor part-time and an Elementary Librarian part-time. When asked what the reason was for deciding to be a counselor, she said, “I love working with and being around students. I chose counseling because I felt like it was something that I would really enjoy doing, and that I could have an impact on students’ lives. Working with students through the counseling process is very rewarding.” There is no certain day-to-day routine of being a counselor. “...There is a lot of variety. You help students with scheduling, career paths, testing, individual and group counseling are just a few of the things to mention.”
She earned her associate’s degree from Carl Albert State College and then transferred to Northeastern State University to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education. She attended East Central University earning two master’s degrees. She first obtained a Master’s degree in School Counseling, and after that she went back to get a Master’s degree in School Library Media. When asked whether she liked being a librarian or counselor more she responded with, “I don’t think that I like one more than the other. I love what I do because I get to work with both elementary and high school students in different situations and environments.” When she’s not at school being both a high school counselor and elementary librarian, she loves designing floral arrangements and she loves arts and crafts. She also enjoys going to sporting events and spending time with her family. “When I was in college I had a friend that shared some tips with me about making flower arrangements and it sparked my interest,” when asked what introduced her into creating flower arrangements.
