The annual Smoke House Fire Safety course for elementary aged students was on September 26th. The Oklahoma Farm Bureau offers this course through the Safety Services Division.
David Turner is with the Oklahoma Farm Bureau and has been a part of the Smoke House course for many years.
Q: Approximately, how many students will go through the course today?
D: About 300 students. On average, 30-35,000 kids will go through the course each year through the state of Oklahoma.
Q: If a family could learn one thing about fire safety, what would it be?
D: One of my main points is smoke detectors. It’s cheap and they’re easy to install. The key thing is the early warning system. So, make sure you have a smoke detector.
Q: What are the benefits of having these students at this age go through the smoke house?
D: It gives children a realistic view of what can happen in a fire. It helps them be able to understand, of course, any kind of problems that may occur. Also, what smoke actually looks like and how important it is to learn how to get out of a building that is on fire in an efficient way.
