The art program has been around for more than 40 years and drama around 20 or so years, this year is the first year without them both around. Superintendent Mr. Nelson states the reason for ending both programs was funding issues and says, “we are looking into getting those programs back, Mr. Hardin is teaching something similar to art and there are also online art classes, we want the students to have that experience back.” Junior Jasmine Aguilar says, “My freshman year was more than excited to be in art class. Once I got there, I got involved in more school activities. I got to express myself in the things I’d create and draw. And the hallway contest, making banners for pep rallies, and help decorate with homecoming. In drama, I was able to be as silly, loud and dumb as I wanted without being judged. I was able to explore another side of me that loved acting and playing the craziest roles you can think of. It was an escape from reality and having to listen, work, and pay attention to things like math. Now that they’re both gone, there’s nothing to look forward to in the day or an hour where I can express myself besides using words. It’s a shame that it’s gone because so much creativity is now lost, especially since there’s art everywhere you look.” Heavener High School graduate Catalina Gonzalez states, “I was shocked that the school didn’t have an art class anymore. It’s been there for a while and it’s gone now. It’s sad that other students won’t get to experience that class, it was hard work but it was fun.”
