Art and drama classes have been a part of Heavener High School for over 20 years. Students and teachers are buzzing about the changes that took place this school year; the art and drama programs no longer exist. They questioned “why” and “what” happened to these programs. The answer comes down to budget cuts. In the art program, there were not enough students to have a full-time art teacher. Some students are sad and hated to see the programs go. They hope they come back in the future.
Haylee White, a former art student says, “not having the art program anymore kinda makes school not as exciting. The art class was my favorite part of the day.” She expressed how the class was fun and how she had great memories of the class. They had great conversations and learned a lot about each other and art in general. According to White, “...the art program was just one big happy family.”
Brittney Burton took drama her junior year and loved it. She will really miss the program and wishes it would come back so the under-classmen could have the opportunity to experience the class. “Some students like to express themselves in that way and now it is gone. “She is going to miss the Drama class and will take the memories with her. Her favorite memories were,”...all the times that we played acting games to practice on our acting. We would just come up with stuff off the top of our head and it was really challenging but fun.”
Hopefully, in the future, the art and drama programs will come back to the curriculum at Heavener High School. They are two programs that students loved and enjoyed. They are missed by many students.
